Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced on Wednesday that he was purchasing Manchester United Plc, the English football team.
Musk, who is well-known for his cheeky tweets, wrote on the microblogging site, “I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.” Though it wasn’t immediately evident if the wealthy investor was sincere in pursuing a deal, his tweet went viral online.
Due to the squad’s troubles on the field, the club’s American owners, the Glazer family, have come under fire from Manchester United supporters. The Old Trafford-based team is now at the bottom of the Premier League following a 4-0 home loss to Brentford.
Manchester United supporters have staged protests in recent years against the Glazers, who acquired the team in 2005 for 790 million pounds ($955.51 million). Manchester United’s market value was $2.08 billion as of Tuesday.
Musk’s tweet received tens of thousands of likes in a matter of minutes and sparked amusing comments from online users. One person said, “If they keep playing like they have, you’ll receive a discount.” Another said, “United players are going to be dangerous in space for the first time.”
