
The film Kantara, which was directed by Rishab Shetty, focuses on a village in coastal Karnataka and how the fight between man and environment in the area is woven into the Daiva Narthaka legend of the place. The movie popularised the Daiva and Guliga method and brought in over 170 crore at the box office worldwide. As depicted in the movie, the Daiva Narthakas play a significant role in the religious and cultural landscape of coastal Karnataka.
On Thursday Bengaluru MP PC Mohan took to Twitter and wrote, “Adoring Daivas, dance, and divine intervention. The BJP-led #Karnataka government has announced a Rs 2,000 monthly allowance for ‘Daiva Narthakas’ above 60 years of age. Bhoota Kola, a spirit worship ritual depicted in the movie #Kantara is part of Hindu Dharma.”
